21Shares launched the Anthropic Synthetic ETP (ticker CLAU) on October 13, listed on the Vienna MTF. The product offers continuous, unleveraged exposure to Anthropic’s implied private valuation ahead of a potential IPO, without granting ownership of shares or shareholder rights. Exposure is derived from notes issued by 21Shares x FalconX Limited, referencing the Kaiko Anthropic USD Reference Rate, which relies on Binance perpetual futures data. Virtu Financial Ireland serves as the authorized participant and market maker. Initial figures showed a NAV of $9.88 per unit and approximately $49,397 in assets under management. The structure includes a 1.00% annual fee and a 2.00% exit fee, with financing costs potentially passing through to the NAV. Marketing is restricted to professional investors in Switzerland and the UK, and the product is not registered for sale in the United States, Canada, Australia, or Japan.
This launch represents a significant convergence of crypto-market infrastructure and traditional exchange-traded products. By utilizing Binance perpetual futures and Kaiko reference rates to price a private AI company, 21Shares creates a synthetic instrument that allows brokerage-accessible exposure to pre-IPO valuations. However, the reliance on derivatives-based pricing introduces distinct risks compared to direct equity ownership, particularly regarding counterparty exposure to FalconX and the volatility inherent in perpetual futures markets.
From an Operational Risk perspective, the structure highlights the complexities of accessing private-company value through public venues. While it addresses investor demand for early exposure, the disconnect between the synthetic reference price and actual verified transactions in Anthropic’s shares means performance may diverge significantly from fundamental reality. Additionally, the dual role of FalconX as both parent company and note counterparty necessitates careful scrutiny of legal recourse provisions for investors.
