House Democrats plan to open investigations into President Donald Trump’s family cryptocurrency businesses once they take control of the chamber in January. The inquiries will target ventures such as World Liberty Financial and the TRUMP memecoin, focusing on financial disclosures and potential conflicts of interest.

Oversight Committee Intent

Representative Robert Garcia of California, who will chair the House Oversight Committee, confirmed the intent to scrutinize the administration’s crypto ties. When contacted by the Associated Press at 3:18 a.m., Garcia responded with the statement, “Lawyer up.” His office stated it intends to examine what it calls the “Trump Crime Family,” alongside corporate corruption, immigration enforcement abuses, and the Epstein files.

Garcia told Punchbowl News that the committee will specifically review the family’s crypto deals, business dealings involving Donald Trump Jr., and activities of relatives such as Jared Kushner. Reuters reported in September that these inquiries could begin as early as February.

World Liberty Financial Scrutiny

A central subject of the anticipated probe is World Liberty Financial, a decentralized finance and stablecoin venture launched by the Trump family in September 2024. Democrats have focused on a $500 million investment by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the United Arab Emirates’ national security adviser. A vehicle associated with Sheikh Tahnoon reportedly acquired a 49 percent stake in the venture shortly before the January 2025 inauguration.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency granted conditional approval for World Liberty’s federal trust bank charter on August 14, with final sign-off pending. According to The Wall Street Journal, Sheikh Tahnoon’s group and a Trump-affiliated entity together control about 87 percent of the bank’s holding company.

Financial Disclosures and Prior Inquiries

Senate Democrats on the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, led by Senator Richard Blumenthal, opened an inquiry into the TRUMP token and World Liberty earlier this year. The scrutiny follows significant crypto-related earnings reported by the president. Trump’s 2025 financial disclosure listed more than $1 billion in crypto income, including about $635 million in TRUMP memecoin royalties. Reuters has estimated the family’s total crypto earnings at $2.3 billion or more.

The investigations may also address the October 2025 pardon of Changpeng Zhao. Zhao has stated he has no business ties to the Trump family and did not discuss clemency with them.

White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis called the Democratic investigation plans a “decade long witch hunt.” Jaret Seiberg of TD Cowen wrote Wednesday that the investigations “may make it impossible to advance a version of Clarity that the crypto sector could back.”
