Representative Bill Huizenga lost his reelection bid in Michigan’s 4th Congressional District to Democrat Sean McCann, despite receiving approximately $1 million in support from the cryptocurrency-focused super PAC Fairshake. The Associated Press called the race on Wednesday afternoon, confirming the defeat of the eight-term Republican congressman.
With more than 97 percent of votes counted, McCann held a narrow lead of 50.1 percent to Huizenga’s 48.3 percent. The margin represented a gap of roughly 7,000 votes out of nearly 300,000 cast in the district. The contest had been rated as “lean Republican” by analysts heading into Election Day Tuesday.
Fairshake and Outside Spending
Federal Election Commission filings indicate that Fairshake reported spending $1,019,166 to support Huizenga in the general election. In October, the super PAC had committed at least $1 million to each of six House incumbents it backed. The district saw significant financial activity overall, with outside groups reporting more than $25 million in total spending. House Majority PAC alone contributed approximately $6 million in opposition to the Republican candidate.
Huizenga, who served as vice chair of the House Financial Services Committee, was one of several high-profile Republicans to lose their seats. In Wisconsin, Representative Bryan Steil lost to Democrat Mitchell Berman by a margin of 52 percent to 48 percent. The Associated Press called the Steil race at 11:48 p.m. on Tuesday.
Broader Political and Market Context
The losses occurred as Democrats won control of the House of Representatives on Tuesday. Following the announcement of the Democratic sweep, Bitcoin prices rallied in trading markets. The outcome in Michigan’s 4th District marks a shift in a chamber where financial services oversight and digital asset regulation have been key legislative topics.
