VanEck Digital Assets has formally withdrawn its application for a Lido staked Ether exchange-traded fund, stating in an SEC filing that it does not intend to proceed with the planned distribution of the trust’s shares. The decision marks the end of the proposed product, which was designed to provide investors with exposure to the liquid staking token stETH and accrue associated staking rewards.
The asset manager initially filed the S-1 registration statement for the fund on October 16, 2025. VanEck did not disclose the specific reasons behind the withdrawal or indicate whether it plans to pursue a replacement product. Cointelegraph contacted VanEck Digital Assets for comment regarding the development.
This withdrawal signals a strategic pause in VanEck's efforts to launch a dedicated vehicle for liquid staking tokens, despite the growing institutional interest in yield-bearing crypto assets. By shelving the stETH ETF, VanEck avoids potential regulatory friction or market risks associated with the complex mechanics of liquid staking derivatives, which differ significantly from spot Ether holdings.
The move highlights the cautious approach major asset managers are taking toward novel crypto structures that lack clear regulatory precedents. While the exact rationale remains undisclosed, the decision suggests that current market conditions or internal risk assessments may not yet support a standalone liquid staking ETF, potentially delaying broader adoption of such products until regulatory clarity improves.
