A Solana-based meme coin named Dacity Coin surged 2,900% in value following the release of the Grand Theft Auto 6 launch trailer on Thursday. The token’s market capitalization jumped from $104,000 to $3.18 million within an hour after the trailer briefly displayed "Dacity Coin" on the side of a plane. This spike occurred despite the token having been created five days earlier, on October 11, via the Pump.fun launchpad, after leaked gameplay footage revealed its inclusion in the game.
The initial leak was attributed to "Cyberleek," a notorious Rockstar hacker, who shared footage showing protagonist Lucia skydiving with an AudaCity parachute featuring slogans associated with the fictional cryptocurrency. Upon its launch, Dacity Coin reached a peak market cap of $1.14 million before stabilizing at lower levels until the official trailer release triggered renewed trading activity. Data from DEX Screener indicates that 24 traders realized profits exceeding $10,000 each during the surge, with one trader turning an investment of $1,912 into $44,000.
As of the latest reporting, Dacity Coin’s market cap has retraced to approximately $1.5 million, representing a 53% decline from its post-trailer peak. The event marks the first confirmed instance of cryptocurrency references in GTA 6, ending years of unsubstantiated rumors regarding play-to-earn features or NFT integrations. Rockstar Games has not issued any statement regarding the token, and Epic Games previously denied any association with similar copycat tokens launched after Fortnite introduced fictional crypto elements.
The rapid appreciation of Dacity Coin illustrates the extreme volatility and speculative nature of meme coins tied to cultural artifacts rather than utility. The fact that the token existed prior to the official trailer release suggests that information asymmetry played a critical role in early price discovery, allowing those with access to leaks to position themselves ahead of the broader market. This dynamic highlights how decentralized finance assets can react instantaneously to mainstream media events, creating temporary liquidity spikes driven by narrative momentum rather than fundamental value.
From a regulatory and reputational standpoint, this incident underscores the risks associated with fictional financial instruments appearing in major entertainment franchises. While Rockstar Games likely intended the reference as satire of crypto hype cycles, the real-world financial impact on traders demonstrates the blurred lines between virtual economies and actual asset markets. The subsequent 53% drop from the peak serves as a cautionary example of the unsustainable nature of such pumps, mirroring previous incidents like the Fortnite-inspired Dill Bits token, which also experienced dramatic rises and falls without developer endorsement.
