SoFi Technologies launched SoFi Earn (SOFIE) on Thursday, introducing a bank-issued tokenized deposit product that offers a variable 4.4% annual percentage yield. The company announced that SOFIE has no minimum balance requirement, with each token representing $1 deposited at SoFi Bank. Customers can convert SOFIE one-for-one into SoFiUSD, the bank’s dollar-pegged stablecoin, to purchase cryptocurrency within its app or transfer funds to supported external wallets.
A key distinction in the product structure is regulatory coverage: SOFIE deposits qualify for Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) insurance up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each account ownership category. In contrast, SoFiUSD does not carry FDIC insurance. This launch follows a final rule issued by the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency on Wednesday regarding payment stablecoin issuance and custody activities, which aligns with the GENIUS Act framework taking effect in mid-January.
The rollout targets SoFi Crypto members through November, allowing access via their existing SoFi Crypto accounts. This move realizes plans reported in May when SoFi first made SoFiUSD available, stating at the time that interest-bearing tokenized deposits would follow shortly.
SoFi's introduction of SOFIE marks a significant convergence of traditional banking infrastructure and crypto-native financial products. By attaching FDIC insurance to the underlying deposit while offering a yield-bearing token, SoFi addresses two major pain points for crypto investors: counterparty risk and idle capital efficiency. The structural separation between the insured deposit (SOFIE) and the uninsured stablecoin (SoFiUSD) creates a clear compliance boundary, allowing users to earn yield on fiat-backed assets before converting them into transactional stablecoins.
This development occurs against a backdrop of tightening regulatory clarity, specifically the OCC's new rules on stablecoin issuance. SoFi appears positioned to leverage this regulatory certainty to attract institutional and retail capital seeking safe-haven yields within the digital asset ecosystem. However, the variable nature of the 4.4% APY introduces market sensitivity; if interest rates fluctuate, the attractiveness of SOFIE relative to other money market instruments may shift rapidly. The phased rollout to Crypto members suggests a controlled expansion strategy, likely aimed at monitoring operational risks before broader public availability.
