Zcash (ZEC) experienced a 12% price surge over the past 24 hours, trading near $1,270 as developers finalized the mainnet activation height for its upcoming NU7 upgrade. The rally followed a GitHub proposal by Zcash developer Sean Bowe on Tuesday, which set the activation block at 3,543,405, with an expected launch date around November 5. This milestone marks significant progress for the privacy-focused cryptocurrency, which has seen its value increase by more than 148% year to date.
The NU7 upgrade aims to reduce Zcash’s target block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, a two-thirds reduction intended to accelerate transaction confirmations. Testing of this change has been ongoing since early October. While the activation height is agreed upon, finalizing the upgrade specifications remains pending before the proposal can be merged. Two developers have approved the changes so far.
Despite the positive market reaction, technical readiness issues persist. The Zcash Foundation’s NU7 readiness tracker indicates that only six of twelve tasks are completed. Remaining work involves resolving Zebra node synchronization issues and finalizing mainnet preparations. Developers have not confirmed whether these outstanding technical challenges will impact the planned November activation date.
The agreement on a specific activation height provides a concrete timeline for the network's most significant performance update in recent history, directly influencing short-term market sentiment. By setting block 3,543,405 as the target, developers have moved the project from theoretical planning to operational execution, reducing uncertainty for exchanges and infrastructure providers who rely on predictable upgrade schedules.
However, the gap between the agreed-upon height and the incomplete readiness tracker highlights a critical operational risk. With half of the preparation tasks remaining, particularly those involving node synchronization, the probability of delays or last-minute adjustments persists. Investors and users should monitor the resolution of these technical bottlenecks, as the successful deployment of the 25-second block time depends entirely on stabilizing the underlying infrastructure before the November deadline.
